Classroom Diversity - Teaching All Students in the Real World
By:Stephen Carr

A lot has been made lately about classroom diversity. Somehow, all students are different and need to be taught in other ways to insure that they are learning. This sounds good up front, but in the long run you cannot and should not change your teaching style for a false hope of better teaching.

First and foremost, classroom diversity must be dealt with by using good teaching techniques. Good teaching never changes. Good teaching already is geared to reach the maximum amount of students. Classroom diversity cannot be changing your teaching for each and every student. If you do that, you will fail as a teacher.

Forget about how different students have different learning styles. You can only have one teaching style. If you try and master more, you are wasting your time. You will lose most of your students. Classroom diversity does not mean teaching to only one group at a time. As said above, good teaching is good teaching. Period.

Here are some things a teacher should already be doing. Classroom diversity becomes a non-issue when using these teaching points.

Make sure all students know the assignment. Write it on the board. Repeat it. Be clear.

Assignments should be readily completed by even your lowest students in a reasonable amount of time.

Pair students in groups or pairs. Silent practice should be avoided when possible.

Don't underestimate your students. They can and will adapt.

Talk to all students the same. Don't patronize.

Anything that should be avoided for one group is probably not suitable for any group.

Do more hands-on work.

Any accommodation for one student is probably beneficial for all.

Picture yourself sitting in class with you as a teacher. What would you like or dislike?

In short, classroom diversity is readily confronted by using only good teaching techniques, no matter what kinds of students you have.
