Teaching Social Skills to Students
By:Austin Barnes

Social skills are an integral part of everyday life for everyone. However, it is often the case that some people don't have a natural ability to express themselves to others. And this is why these social skills need to be taught to these individuals. When teaching social skills to others, there are three ways to help you.

First you, as a teacher, need to illustrate the social skills you are teaching. Being an example is one of the best ways that your students will learn the social skills needed for communication. Personifying the conversation skills and politeness that you are teaching is your best asset when teaching this most needed asset.

Next, the teacher should teach specific social skill techniques. In order to do this, you should research and read up on which social skills work best and would be most valuable to your students. One of the best places to start would be to help students show an interest in what the other person is saying and listening. So, to start, the teacher should show the students how to demonstrate their interest and become good listeners.

The third step a teacher needs to express is encouraging the students to practice. In order to practice the teacher can bring in role playing a conversation or helping them to introduce or greet one another. Being able to practice these well-needed tools will help them to use their new found skills without thinking about it.

Helping others to learn social skills can be a daunting task, but if you exemplify them yourself, help them to learn certain techniques and encourage them to practice, your students will quickly improve their conversation skills and increase their popularity.
