It Comes Natural For Some
By:John Parks

As many people are certainly aware, each person is generally endowed with a certain set of latent talents that they are pretty much born with. Some people, for instance, have an uncanny ability to perform and write music; others might be amazingly competent at drawing or painting. There are all types and manners of natural talent in the world, and this same principle can be extended to the classroom.
It definitely seems to usually be the case the students are either naturally gifted at math, or they struggle with it. There does not seem to be much of a middle ground when it comes to this subject. When you take a math course, you are very likely to notice that some of the students in the classroom don't even seem to need to pay attention to the teacher or the professor; they seem to come into the classroom already completely capable and with an amazing understanding of math. These students always seem to breeze through pop quizzes, homework assignments and final exams with seemingly no effort at all.

Then there are students for whom math is tremendously difficult. These people can show up diligently for class every single day; they can pay rapt attention to whatever the teacher or professor says or writes on the chalkboard. These students can toil over homework for hours on end, every single night, and study endlessly for tests and exams in great and incredible depth. No matter what kind of amazing efforts they put forth, though, these students still never seem to really get ahead and truly be comfortable with the subject of math.

This phenomenon definitely suggests that people's brains are simply "wired" differently. Whereas some people have brains that are more geared for, or wired to, the subject of math, others might be more naturally inclined to understand subjects such as grammar or creative writing. Whether or not someone has a brain that is wired for math does not necessarily gauge how intelligent they are over all; indeed, many students who are tested with an intelligence quiz can still end up scoring a very high IQ, even though they perform rather dismally at math.

And the inability to effortlessly learn about and understand math does not by any means "doom" a student to never having a job that requires math skills. There are absolutely a large number of bankers and accountants for whom math does not come easily; but for one reason or another, they decided that this was a career path they wanted to pursue, and they learned to overcome their difficulties. Also, some people simply genuinely enjoy a real challenge; confronted with evidence that math is not an easy subject for them, some students simply refuse to believe it, and work that much harder to achieve success in the subject.

Whether you are a student who loves and effortlessly understands math, or if you are more apt to English or grammar, for instance, you are undoubtedly endowed with many natural talents. The key is discovering them and putting them to great use.
