PLAYING ROLE IN CLASS
By:Harekrushna Behera - Teacher in Social Science

SOMETIMES I go beyond the thought of mere syllabus completion & think for a solution for the students about to give a new method of learning so that they will not feel bore & try to accept my class as a class with full of enjoyment. Time to time I also take the opinion of my students as friends to change my teaching style so that they will feel quite interesting. The plan to start dramatization as method & experience its charms was completely waiting since long. It was the time when the class room of std-VIII was in a full swing as I was in a hurry to discuss the concept of ‘scarcity of water', the bug of innovative teaching methodology started climbing my head & entered into it. Suddenly I declared, ‘my friends! Can we go for a new experiment which I was thinking since long? One thought is triggering my mind.' Then the children asked seriously, ‘What Sir?' Then I discussed about my plan. ‘Children, can we go for two plays-one by the girls & other by the boys? And the theme would be about the scarcity of water. But the time is very short. You have to take only two days to prepare.' The school was about to be closed after three days as the summer vacation was approaching.

All the students took this proposal as a challenge. Then started murmuring among them-about the story of the play & how they can decide the play. They decided to come to the school at evening to decide the play & act accordingly. Both the boys & girls group were in a full swing to show their capacities. What I feel.. "the teacher is a great motivator in this world. If he wants to input any thought & action within the behaviour of the children, very soon he can." Within this assigned time period of two days time to time I was asking about their progress. "We, the teachers & Parents are wrong to think anything impossible for the children. But the children never think anything impossible to them." Once one child came to me & told, ‘Sir, nothing is impossible to us. Do you know why? Because ‘Impossible' itself is saying, ‘I+m+possible=Impossible'. Just I became exclaimed by listening his thought.

The time became matured. The children were ready to behave the class as dramatization. Now the hauling was from both the side- ‘U first & U first'. I played the role as a mediator by tossing the matter. The boys are final to play the role first. Then without any late the play started. The play was in a very informal way in the class. There was no dress, props, stage & so on. Still the interest of the children made the play lively. I was really surprised to enjoy the play. The play showed the lesson of scarcity of water in a village. The door of the class-room was closed earlier to avoid the disturbance to any other classes. Truly the children showed the unthinkable things by finding the ways.

Then the turn of the girls came. They had the best anchoring group who announced everything before & during the play. The play of the girls was about the lesson to save the water in the house itself. Both the plays ended but the enjoyment continued just like music among everyone.

All they were waiting for the result from me ‘Who scored how much?' But I became silent. I couldn't, as I was very busy to discover the potentialities within everybody. What can I express about the result! I declared the result & effect of this method on every student at general, in the following ways...

• Children, you have a lot of capacities. Try to feel it.
• Role play is nothing but the means to expose your all qualities within.
• Your fear factor to speak something in the stage is already no more.
• The time is not far away when you all become the all rounder of the school.
I had nothing more to say except accepting & realizing the importance of the ‘Dramatization' method to apply among them.

Thanks & respect to those teachers who always find a new way out for the children to make their subject interesting. Gone are the days when the teacher was playing the role of a ‘GURU' by lecture method (where the children had a great fear for the Guru). Now the time has been changed. This is the learning age by the way of friendship. The teaching world has become a platform of Friendship. Freedom to both the teacher & students has become a must. Thus, why not to play the role of an innovative teacher? Why not be great in the impression of the children?
