ESL Teaching - Tips For Teaching Students Activities
By:Peter Callig

In order to successfully complete an activity with your students there are some things you may need to do. This article offers some tips to teachers on this matter.

What are the actions teachers should take in order to complete an activity?

1) Be ready - Make sure you are fully prepared and have the language you will be using ready. Do some ground work and think of some of the questions the students may ask and the difficulties they may have. Be ready to answer their questions by studying the material you will be using.

2) Signal - Create a signal that will communicate a message to the students. Getting their attention will become much easier if you have a signal that immediately transmits a message to them. Good examples include holding your hand up, ringing a bell or clapping your hands.
Associate some actions to these signal which the students need to carry out, such as being quiet, standing up or sitting down.

3) Stop -Do not start until everyone is ready and has your attention. It is very difficult to start a class when everyone is not ready. Wait for them to stop talking and concentrate.

4) Explain - Give the students clear instructions about what they are going to be doing.

5) Context - Create a context so the students can relate the activity to what they have been learning.

6) Groups - Divide the class up into groups and pairs. This helps to control and motivate them.

7) Examples - Show plenty of examples of what they are expected to do and give a demonstration of how the activity works.

8) Check - Make sure the students are clear about what they are supposed to do before starting the activity. Check they are clear about who their partner is and what group they are in.
