What to Expect at English Teacher Conferences
By:Troy Alexander

English teachers are often expected to gain continuing education credits throughout the course of their career. Sometimes professional training conferences at the national and state level provide opportunities for obtaining these credits. Conferences are also a great way for English instructors to network, share resources and stay informed about the latest and greatest trends in teaching, curricula, and other classroom products.

There are a lot of conferences for teachers hosted by numerous organizations and associations throughout the year. As a teacher preparing to attend a conference, these tips can help you get the maximum benefits from your experience:

Tips:

• If you have one available, it's a good idea to bring a laptop along. Even if you don't use it during the day's events, they make it easy to organize your notes and ideas after the workshops have ended.

• Sometimes presentations run a little long or you get that nasty tickle in the back of your throat when speaker is presenting. Take a water bottle and perhaps a small snack with you for breaks.

• You can never have enough pens and notebooks. Take a small notepad that can be tucked in your pocket or purse for those little moments of inspiration.

• Don't forget to bring one of your teacher lanyards with you for showing off your conference credentials. Lanyards are also nice tools to have to keep pens or eye glasses close by.

• Always look at the conference schedule before you get there. Decide which workshops and training sessions you want to attend, and opt for the sessions that will benefit you the most.

• Be an active participant at the conference. The more you engage with the speakers, presenters and your colleagues, the more you will learn and benefit from attending.

• If the conference lasts a couple of days and you plan to stay overnight, stay at the recommended hotel. You'll be close to all the events during the day and you'll have an opportunity for networking in the evenings.

National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Convention

One group that holds an annual English teacher conference is the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). These conferences bring unique innovations and research in teaching to English teachers and inform them on the last English teaching strategies, content and products.

The thing that makes conventions great training resources for English teachers is that they help further professional development and growth and self-improvement. At these kinds of conferences, English teachers are able to benefit by collaborating with peers and learning from leaders in the field of English education.

Additional Conference Information

For more information on conferences and for additional educational resources, you can check with professional and academic journals such as the Modern English Teacher. Professional journals often contain the latest information on upcoming conventions and association conferences as well as the latest news in the field. Many publications also have conference listings made available on their websites.
