School Survival - 10 Tips to Survive a Disaster
By:David W Simmons

If you are a school teacher and a disaster such as an earthquake, tornado or fire strikes, then your first priority must be school survival.

Even though the chances of any of these events happening are extremely rare you must be prepared and ready to act so here are 10 tips which will prepare you should the unthinkable happen.

These tips are based on a class of 30 children so you can scale any suggested amounts up or down to suit your requirements. It is wise to store school survival items in a plastic container or even better, a portable toilet. School survival kits should be stored away somewhere which is both safe and allows easy access.

Always make sure you have adequate supplies of food. It is recommended that you have at least 4 - 2400 Calorie Food Bars for each child. These will give each person enough energy to see them through a classroom lockdown situation. Be sure to purchase food supplies that have at least a 5 year shelf life. It is also a good idea to keep some sweets which will help the students take their minds off whatever is going on.
Having an adequate, clean water supply is vitally important so you should ensure that a water pouch for each child is available as well as water purification tablets for extended emergencies.
You will need some type of whistle. Although it is only a very basic tool, it could actually save your life. If you and your class become cut off from the rest of the school, a simple signaling device can alert rescuers that are trying to locate you.
A flashlight and a radio should be included and also some form of lighting which could be used as an alert beacon. An emergency bright stick would be ideal. The radio can provide some entertainment but it will also keep you up to date on any news which could facilitate your rescue.
It is important that adequate sanitation supplies are available during this period. The obvious items to keep on-hand include toilet tissue rolls and cleaning supplies, but also keep plastic bags with chemicals which can dispose of any waste. The ability to dispose of human waste is vitally important and you can see why it is a good idea to have a portable toilet which also acts as a storage container.
For hygiene purposes, include some wet naps and also a couple of small bottles of hand sanitizer. A couple of air fresheners will not take up much room in storage and will make life a little more bearable in these conditions.
A comprehensive first aid kit is an absolute necessity and it will pay off in the long run if you get the best one available. Don't forget it should be large enough to accommodate the number of students in your care.
The radio was mentioned earlier as a form of entertainment but I would also advise you to include a couple of packs of playing cards or coloring books for children. It is important that everyone is kept occupied rather than just sitting there worrying what may or may not happen.
Always make sure that there are at least two people awake at all times to listen for rescuers that are trying to make contact or for any other signs, such as the smell of gas for example.
As the teacher, school survival depends a great deal on how you react so keep calm at all times and this attitude will have a calming effect on your students.
School survival kits are vital to keep in the classroom. Being prepared as a teacher or school administrator is an important factor in safeguarding the lives of the ones we love the most.
