Four Study Habits Tips
By:Charles F Waters

Good study habits are essential to the success of students at any level of education. It is just as important for a fifth grader to learn and implement good study habits, as it is for an older person in a continuing education program at the local college. In this article I will cover four of the more important study habits that every student should learn if they want to do well in school and be effective in retention of information.

Tip #1: Do The Hard Stuff First

Adjust your study schedule to tackle the most difficult topics or subjects first. This way you can essentially face those topics that you dread head on. Once you have mastered these topics you can move on to the topics that you find more enjoyable or are easier. By doing the hard assignments first you take full advantage of your brain when it is more mentally alert.

Tip #2: Avoid Interruptions

Explain to friends and family that you have designated a certain time during the day to study uninterrupted. Explain that you would appreciate it if they would hold everything but the most critical problems until you are finished.

Turn off your home phone and cell phone. Change your voicemail message to let friends know that you are studying and will call them back when you're finished. While working on your computer turn off all notification services for email, Skype, Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter. Set you chat applications to Away or Busy.

If you can avoid interruptions you will be able to study during the time you have allotted and will be able to get more done.

Tip #3: Get Help

You must realize that you don't have to do it all on your own. Enlist the help of family members, friends, and classmates who are knowledgeable about the topic that you are studying. Others who are familiar with the material can offer a different perspective on problems.

Don't forget that your most important resources is your instructor or teaching assistant. Often they will be able to explain a problem in a different way than it was presented in class, and give you the insight that you need. Don't waste time and energy trying to attempt something on your own that may not be achieveable.

Tip #4: Stay Positive

Make sure that you have a positive mental attitude. Make sure that you have a mind clear of distractions and negativity. A positive mindset will give you the power to stick to your goals and achieve them.
