Disruptive High School Students - Disciplining As a Friend
By:Jurinsthea Smith

The toughest part a teacher can deal with is on disruptive high school students. Disciplining them is in fact one of the most challenging parts in a teacher's life. For one, they already have that mind and judgment to do things they want. More importantly they are not kids anymore who tend to follow directions imposed by others.

If you happen to be an educator in the context of a high school environment, perhaps you are already strained as to how to deal with these kinds of students. Acting on iron fist is actually not suggested. What teenagers would do is to do things that were stated not to. Oftentimes, you might see yourself on the defensive side because you can't just punish them because you might just lose your job. Thus to be able to deal disruptive high school students you must be a friend to them. Here's how to start.

Procedure #1: Talk to them personally. One of the most trusted allies of any teenager is a friend. Thus, be like one to them. As much as possible allocate a portion of your time to them. Generate small talks and chit chats when you meet them along the corridor or in the canteen. You can even do this after every class period. Talk to them things that can interest them aside from the usual subject matter. It is in this case you can be able to know them more and they will personally open themselves to you.

Procedure #2: Gain their trust. Trust is something to be worked upon and not given away. As you proceed with your small talks every so often, you might find some already relying on your end especially on a personal level. This is a proof that you had gained their trust. You can even have some small mini tutorials under your subject matter as this will imply that you indeed care for them. And with care comes trust. As a very important note, do not ever break that trust.

Procedure #3: Tap and discipline disruptive students. If you happen to be talking with the disruptive students and gaining their trust in the process, it is very easy on your end to discipline them. This time you will not act as their teacher but as an older brother or sister. You can tend to tell them the things you would not want them to do during your small chit chats. You can even relay it as a joke. It is in this case, they will not be offended rather than calling their attention in class. You might even find this favorable since they will duly follow what a friend tells them to do.

High school students are not that really difficult compared to the elementary ones. The thing that you really need to be effective is to have the heart and compassion to them. This can be your tool in order to deal disruptive high school students.
