Dealing With Noisy Students
By:Pam Donaldson

After spending a few weeks in the same classroom with the same peers, your students will become more comfortable with their environment. They'll make friends and as a group they'll become braver in terms of misbehaving in class.

If you find your students influencing each other into poor behavior, try simply changing their seating arrangement. This will restore your authority as the head of the classroom.

Changing the seating arrangement will also allow you to hand-pick a location for each student, affording you the option of separating students who have begun to collaborate on misbehaving in class. If you've noticed your students becoming more and more courageous in their attempts to undermine your authority, you should act to quell this behavior as soon as possible.

When it comes to reassigning your students to new seats, however, there's a right time and a wrong time to do it. The middle of a lesson is the wrong time. Instead, create the new seating arrangement overnight and have it ready for the students when they enter the classroom the next day.

It's a good idea to keep one seat open at the front of the classroom. This one empty seat can be used in several ways. You can use it to store teaching materials so that you don't have to return to your own desk as frequently.

The empty desk at the front of the room is also a great spot for students who act out in class. Clear the desk of your things and it makes an ideal spot, right at the front of the class, for the troublemakers.

In cases of serious student misconduct, tell the student to gather his or her things and move up to the seat at the front of the room.

Being called out and placed in this seat is an embarrassing ordeal for a student and will correct his or her behavior most of the time. If the student does act out again, you will have a clear view of any misconduct.
