Youngsters Learn English
By:Gino Lipata

The English Language is becoming one of the most used languages internationally nowadays. In fact, most of the Asian countries started hiring English Teachers from English speaking countries to let their young generation learn English. It is not only Asian countries, but also some countries in the Middles East. These non-native speaking countries also hire English teacher from all over the world as long as the teacher is qualified and passed all the necessary requirements in teaching English as the Second Language.

Recently I had applied as an English Teacher in one of the schools in Saudi Arabia. Luckily, I was called up for an interview. I was interviewed by an Arabian National, the owner of the school himself. During our conversation, I was informed that I’ll be handling young kids, and instructed that these children will learn English in due time. Since I am a teacher, I know where and when to begin a lesson suited for these youngsters. Unfortunately, I did not push through for some personal matters.

This only proves that English language really plays a vital role in humanity today. Figuratively speaking, the world is becoming smaller as it revolves around the sun. During the past three decades, if you want to go or see other country's culture, scenic spots and others, you need to fix all the necessary documents for you to be able to travel to another country to see these. Of course, that is still the process nowadays, but if you want to have comprehensive information about a country on these days, you don’t have to fix any documents. Today, you are only a click away from other countries. This is figurative view that this world is really getting smaller and smaller.

Just like the English as the Second Language, people from non-native speakers are also a click away to learn English. But of course, teaching young kids at the age of six up to ten years old is another story because these youngsters need to start from the basic, from memorizing the alphabet and the strokes in writing the letters. Not to mention the proper articulation in pronouncing these letters and words.

Because we are speaking on kids, you have to show the factors affecting the letters or words the way they are produced in sounds. You have to show to the kids your lower and upper teeth and your tongue in between your teeth in producing the sound “ t ”. Showing this is very important for the kids to comprehend exactly the sound of a letter or a word as it is pronounced.

The same with writing, you have to show to the kids how a letter is being written. Taking up capital letter “A” as an example, we have to demonstrate in front of these young learners that a capital letter “A” is formed by a combination of a slash, a backslash and a horizontal line at the middle, connecting both slashes at the middle. While demonstrating the manner of writing the “A”, it should be written in a writing pad with three lines color coded to serve as a guide so that at the time your also teach the correct size of these letters. Furthermore, the blackboard or whiteboard should have a color coded lines also for all the learners to see the strokes as you demonstrate it.

It seems very easy, isn’t it? Yes it is! All you need is a bunch of patients and a huge determination so that these kids will be able to learn English as their second language.
