Can a school principal legally give out personal information about teachers to parents?
By:answers.yahoo.com

Last fall, I was diagnosed with mononucleosis just before the school year began. According to my doctors, I was no longer contagious when school started. However, I did miss several days of work, so I had to share the reason for my absence with my principal. I expected her to keep my personal medical information private. Upon returning to school, I was quite distraught when I learned that she had shared all of the details of my illness with a group of parents. Can she do this? I feel that it was highly inappropriate for her to share my medical information, especially since the doctors confirmed that there was no risk to my students or coworkers.

Also, this spring, the same principal took it upon herself to disclose my personal unlisted cell phone number to parents, giving them permission to contact me at home. Again, I question whether she can legally do this. Does the fact that I teach in a public school mean that I have no right to privacy? Do I have any legal recourse?

Additional Details

By the way, my cell phone is the only phone I use (I don't bother with a land line). We are required to have a phone number on file with the school... otherwise, I would not have provided it to my employer at all.
