International students are almost always facing different challenges once they reach a foreign country to study in. Aside from the basic academic challenges, such students are also striving to overcome the problems arising from cultural differences. Thus, Asian students studying in the United States or in the United Kingdom are almost always allotting a long period of adjustment for them to become familiarized and accustomed to the new environment they are in. US and UK cultures are more Westernized, liberalized and sophisticated compared to the usually traditional and conservative approaches rampant in Asian countries.

Aside from the cultural differences, foreign students are also subjected to setbacks brought about by differences in language. English is the universal language. However, there are still many countries that are not really using this language. For example, China and Japan are patriotic but now, are rushing to embrace English as a basic and important language. For students not really familiar with the English language, here are some guidelines that will help make learning the language easier and more effective.

- Study a set of words or sentence structures every day. Learning a language is cumulative in nature. What you learn today will naturally be added to what you will learn tomorrow and in the future.

- Allot a few hours to learning the language daily. During such study sessions, divide the time by taking different tasks. For example, you would learn vocabulary now and then proceed to grammar after a few minutes and reading literature in the next part and so on.

- Get into language proficiency classes. Ask if there are English as a second language sessions in your school.

- Be comfortable in speaking the language by practicing speaking it. Participating in class through oral recitation can make up as a good practice exercise.

- Have a good and positive attitude towards the initiative. This will help a lot.
