How to Teach Private English Lessons in Chile
By:Lane Cummings

Chile is a country in the Southern part of South America that borders Peru, Bolivia, Argentina and the Pacific Ocean. Chile has made enormous progress in the past few years, dramatically reducing the rates of poverty throughout the country. It has high literacy rates. While Spanish is the dominant language, school children learn English from a young age and the country has a high demand for English language teachers.

Via an Institute

Visit the website www.eslbase.com/schools/chile. This will give you a comprehensive listing of the language schools in Chile.

Email each school your resume and a cover letter. A cover letter should detail your qualifications and experience, why you want to travel to Chile and when you would like to start teaching. Explain that you would like to focus mostly or solely on teaching private lessons.

Prepare to make at least a one-year commitment, once a school does make a job offer. Few schools will sponsor a work visa without that commitment. Also be prepared for the fact that the school may ask you to teach group lessons as well as private lessons.

Independently

Decide where in Chile you'd like to live and post advertisements in those local newspapers either in newspapers or on line. If you can't write in Spanish, ask a friend or translator to translate the advertisements.

Post fliers in every allowable public place: Internet cafes, cinemas, bars, public bathrooms, office buildings, in the subway, health clubs, English language schools, etc. Make sure your fliers are in English and Spanish and mention your qualifications.

Set competitive rates. Find out how much the local English-language schools charge for private lessons and make your rates lower. Some students may feel less-inclined to study with a teacher not affiliated with a school, so having lower rates should help make them feel more comfortable.

Print business cards. Give a business card to every student you have to give to friends and family. Word of mouth is a powerful means of attracting business as a tutor.
