School:Lahore American School (LAS)

The Lahore American School (LAS) is an independent co-educational day school which offers an educational program from preschool through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. Selective admission is based on prior academic achievement, standardized test scores, a writing sample, and a personal interview. Originally founded in 1956 to serve American students overseas, LAS is a highly recognized international institution following an American College Preparatory curriculum. The curriculum is a standards based curriculum consistent with contemporary curriculum in the United States. The academic environment at LAS is rigorous, demanding, and competitive; and the level of English used in the classroom is comparable to an American college preparatory school.

The school, which includes high school, middle school, and elementary, is housed in a large facility on four and one half acres. The school features large classrooms, two computer labs, an access computer lab, two music rooms, two art rooms, and a large cafeteria. LAS also has an excellent and safe elementary playground. The soccer field, heated swimming pool, library containing over 20,000 volumes, modern science and computer laboratories, EFL room, and infirmary are all part of the school facilities. All classrooms are spacious, well equipped, and fully air-conditioned. There is also a multi-purpose facility which includes covered basketball courts and a sports activity center. The 350 seats theatre arts complex is widely used for both school and community events.

ACCREDITATION
LAS has been accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools since 1984.

THE FACULTY
The international faculty is comprised of citizens from the United States, Pakistan, Canada, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Iran, Egypt, and Lebanon. Most hold master's degrees, and 90% hold teaching credentials from the U.S.A. and Canada.

ENROLLMENT
In 2004-2005 there are 371 students from 18 countries. Approximately 13% are American citizens, 67% Pakistani citizens, and 20% citizens from other nations. The enrollment in grade 9-12 is 145 students. The faculty : student ratio is 1 : 8.4.

EXTRA CURRICULAR PROGRAMS
Activities include Math Counts, debate, ballet, yoga, cricket, puppet making, choir, computer club, yearbook, drama club, school wide community service program, summer internship program, student council, National Honor Society, literary/art club, peer tutoring program, and literary magazine. LAS belongs to the South Asia Inter School's Association (SAISA) which sponsors fine arts festivals focusing on music, art, and drama. There are both SAISA and Pakistani League sports which include basketball, soccer, swimming, track, volleyball, tennis, and cricket.
