Established in 1991, VIS is an independent, nonprofit day school which offers a quality international-standard curriculum from Preschool (3-4 year olds) through Secondary 7 (16-18 year olds) for qualified students of all nationalities.

The Western-based program is designed to help international students move on either to their next international school or to a similar school in their home country. As well, Vientiane International School prepares qualified Lao national students for higher education in Australia, Europe or North America.

The language of instruction is English. The school year runs from mid-August to mid-June.
The school received accreditation in 2001 from both the US-based Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and the European Council of International Schools (ECIS).

VIS is one of a small number of schools in Asia to receive accreditation from both of these agencies, and the only accredited school in Lao PDR.

• students from upper grades often interact with students in lower grades and lead

after-school activities.

Vientiane International School is a member of the East Asia Regional Council of Overseas Schools (EARCOS) and the Mekong River International Schools Association (MRISA).
