How to Get Immunized Before Travel to China
By:Collaborator

Long before you pack your bags for a trip to China, you may want to consider getting immunized. While the CDC does not require vaccinations for travel to China, there are several recommended vaccinations. If you prepare properly, you can avoid getting sick on the trip of a lifetime.

Consult the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Web site. You will find information regarding recommended vaccinations for travel to East Asia. This site is very informative and can provide you with a good starting point when considering what vaccinations you may need.

Make a list of the immunizations recommended by the CDC to bring to your doctor's office. Some doctors are well versed in vaccinations for travel abroad, while other doctors may not have as much experience dealing with preparation for foreign travel.

Call your doctor and make an appointment about four to six weeks before you plan to travel. You will need several weeks for a vaccination to take affect.

Talk to your doctor about the parts of China you will be visiting. Generally, you are at greater risk if you plan to visit rural areas. Together you can make a good decision about what vaccinations you may need.

Ask about potential side effects from the vaccinations. Generally you will have a sore arm, but you should be aware of other more serious side effects.

Show your doctor your vaccination records. Some vaccinations such as Tetanus and Polio may require a booster.

Obtain a copy of all vaccinations received.
