National Academy of Education Administration (NAEA) is under the direct jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education (MOE) serving as a unique institution of our country which provides training for educational administrators nationwide.

Nominated by the Ministry of Education and approved by Chairman Mao Zedong NAEA was founded in 1955 with her name as Education Administration Academy. It was closed in 1960 and reopened with approval from the State Council and a new name of Central Academy of Education Administration. In 1991 its name was changed to the present one.

The core of the NAEA mission is to offer training for senior educational administrators and carry out relevant research in the field of educational administration and management with a focus on the nation’s educational development and reform as well as the central tasks of MOE. In addition, it is responsible for assisting MOE personnel department and other departments in examining trainees and conducting investigation, research and consultation in the area of training of educational administrators and other fields of work.

The training model consists of four types: senior seminars, training seminars, workshops and senior workshops. The trainees include senior leaders and middle managers from higher education institutions, educational officials from the provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities, cities and counties. At the same time it operates different training programs for different groups. The duration of training varies with the training programs. Most of the programs are short-term. Over 20,000 educational administrators and officials throughout the country have been trained since the country’s reform and opening-up policy in 1980s.

At present there are 54 full-time and part-time faculty, among them 25 are professors and associate professors. Government senior officials and renowned specialists and scholars both home and abroad are often invited as part-time lecturers. There are four academic departments, namely Department of Social Sciences, Department of Educational Theory, Department of Educational Administration and Department of International Education.

NAEA has been active in international education exchanges and co-operation. It has successfully implemented several projects funded successively by CIDA, UNDP, UNESCO, ADB and the World Bank on training and improvement of both higher and basic education administrators, and started to implement Overseas Training Project for University Leaders launched with joint effort by the Ministry of Education and the State Administration for Foreign Experts Affairs. Various linkages have been established with educational institutions in USA, Japan, Korea, UK, Germany, Canada, the Philippines, etc. and Hong Kong SAR.
