Shanghai Singapore International School (SSIS) was established in 1996 to provide quality international education to children of expatriate families in Shanghai. Privately owned by the Prime Group International and registered in Shanghai, its first campus was set up in 1996 at the SunIsland Golf Resort in Shanghai's Qingpu District with only 18 students and 9 teachers.

To meet the needs of its expanding enrolment, the school relocated to its MinHang Campus at Zhu Di Road in MinHang District in 2001. With its growing recognition from expatriate families, a second campus was set up in XuHui District in 2003 to bring the unique SSIS education one step closer to families residing in the heart of the city, especially those from the PuDong area.

In 2006, SSIS celebrated its 10th Anniversary with a brand new campus building in MinHang, occupying a land area of 64,000 square metres and the capacity to accommodate 2500 students approximately.
