Located in the center of Chongqing, the newest municipality directly under the Central Government, and an important crossroads on the upper reaches of Changjiang (Yangtze) River for politics, economics, and culture, as well a hub for communication in Southwest China, is Chongqing Medical University (CQMU), a national first-class medical university, providing higher education in medicine and other related fields for more than 50 years. Founded by more than 400 medical stuff branched from famous Shanghai Medical College Fudan University in 1956, the real history of CQMU should be much longer. CQMU has now become one of the key universities with "Bachelor-Master-Doctor-postdoctoral" comprehensive system of talents training.

Walking into the beautiful campus, one can enjoy the fragrance of flowers abloom, walk beneath the shade of green trees, listen to water flowing underneath the many small bridges, and wander the many quiet winding paths. This is a campus open to the world and new ideas, full of democracy and harmony, waiting to give both wisdom and enjoyment to students from all over the world. The statue of Chairman Mao, standing tall and upright in the center of campus, is a witness to the progress and development of the university. Doves fly overhead to welcome guests as they first enter the main campus square. They soar above fountains that constantly change their look under bright sunshine.

The main campus occupies 2.67 millions square meters of land, among that , there are 0.9 million square meters for teaching. The total worth of teaching, research and medical equipment is 784 million RMB while 109 million copies of books is collected (electronic copies are including). And "Jingyun Second Campus" of 1,533,410 square meters (2,300 mu) of the university (under construction) is located in "the city of universities" of Chongqing.

Currently, the university boasts 12 colleges, 8 departments and 32 specialties and direction for undergraduates. The volume of students on campus is 21,249. Among them, 346 doctoral students, 1,963 master's degree students (including 15 master's degree foreign students), 14,804 undergraduate and three-year program students, 3,825 undergraduate and three-year program students for adult education, 311 foreign students. The university employs 4,823 personnel, among which 267 are professors, 774 associate professors, and 1,580 Intermediate professional and technical personnel.

CQMU has made many achievements in her education work. To name just a few, one program of our teachers has been selected as "Changjiang Scholar and development plan of innovation team" of State Education Ministry; 1 teacher as "Outstanding professional and technical personnel of China"; 3 as the state candidates?of first and second level of "project for millions and thousands of talents"; 3 as the state candidates of national level of "project for millions and thousands of talents of new century"; 1 as the candidate of "New century talents support plan" of State Education Ministry; 2 as the "cross-century advanced talents"; 9 as the "plan of financial support for backbone teachers of institutes of higher learning"; 8 as the?" financial support plan for advanced young teachers"; 4 have won financial support from the Young Teacher's Foundation for the Ying Tong Education Foundation, Young Teacher's Award Foundation; 11 have received the title of young and middle aged experts at the national and province level for their advanced contribution; 1 position of "Accredited Bayu scholar Professor" invited from foreign country; 1 as "outstanding professional and technical personnel of Chongqing Municipality"; 7 as "advanced professional and technical personnel of Chongqing Municipality"; 3 as the first level, and15 as the second level of "322" Talents Project of Chongqing Municipality; 38 teachers are on the name list of the first group of academic and technical leading members of Chongqing Municipality; 46 have entered the name list of reserved candidates of first group of academic and technical leading members of Chongqing Municipality; 24 have been young and middle aged experts of institutes of higher learning of Chongqing Municipality. 74 teachers have been accepted into the plan of financial support of young and middle aged backbone teachers of institutes of higher learning of Chongqing Municipality. As well, 117 experts and professors of this university have received a special allowance from the government.

CQMU has 5 first-class affiliated hospitals directly under the university with 2,665 authorized beds (Another 1,500 beds of the third affiliated hospital will be put into practice next year.), 2.76 millions outpatients and 97,000 inpatients annually. Chongqing's first international hospital ---Jinshan hospital CQMU---will be opening on September 1 this year. CQMU also has other 4 affiliated hospitals and 22 teaching hospitals with ties to CQMU; each has beautiful surroundings and advanced technology.

There are three academic disciplines of national importance (Infectious diseases, Pediatrics and Clinical laboratory diagnosis), 29 academic disciplines of provincial-municipal importance, 1 national engineering research institute, 3 provincial-ministry collaborative laboratories of national importance, 15 laboratories of provincial importance; 11 research institutes of municipal-university level, 3 research centers, and 20 research laboratories and centers. CQMU has three post doctoral programs, 26 accredited programs of national second level disciplines offering doctorate degrees, 53 accredited programs of national second level disciplines offering masters degrees, and 185 Ph.D. advisors.

CQMU has successively accomplished research on scientific and technological key projects identified in the state 6th "Five Year Plan" to the 9th "Five Year Plan". Other research recommended by the keystone and general projects of the State natural Scientific Foundation has been carried out. To name just a few, some high-level scientific research projects involving international cooperation like the "863" high-tech projects; projects for the national advanced youth fund; the national new medication fund; the cross-century talents fund of the State Education Ministry, etc. According to the China Science and Technology Information Institute, the Center for Information Retrieval, 2005 paper reports the results of the analysis noted CQMU'S published papers in major journals ranking No.42 in various college National wild. CQMU published journals such as "Chongqing University Journal" , "Chinese Journal of liver disease" "clinical ultrasound medical journals", "Medical Education" , "Journal of Pediatric Pharmacy explore" and so on are public offer both domestic and oversea. Since 1978, CQMU has been awarded National Technological Progress prize, the Technical Invention prize, and other Science & Technology Achievement 545 times. CQMU has also developed the high-intensity focused ultrasound treatment equipment (HIFU) which is the primary and precedent in the world,? and most importantly, it is China's first large-scale medical equipment with completely independent intellectual property. Since its Industrialization, it has been used at more than 30 major hospitals in the country and exported to many countries like England, Japan, Korea, Singapore and so on.

Since China opened to the outside world, CQMU has established academic relations with many west countries for advanced training, study, or mutual exchanges like America, England, Canada, Japan, Russia, France, Germany, Australia, Holland, Switzerland and the Hong Kong area. The university has built extensive international scientific and technological relations with other universities and organizations in the world like Columbia University in America, Liverpool University in England, The Public Health Institute of Japan, Roche Company of Switzerland, the World Health Organization as well as others in France and Hong Kong just to name a few. And 120 medical experts from America, Japan, England, France, Germany, Canada, Australia, Switzerland, Holland, Thailand, and Hong Kong area have been awarded the titles of visiting and honorary professors. Since 1984, CQMU began to accept medical students of undergraduate, master, doctoral and postdoctoral degrees from all over the world like England, France, Germany, Hong Kong and so on for their elective courses and medical practices.
