North China Institute of Science and Technology (NCIST) is the only one public university affiliated to the State Administration of Work Safety (the State Administration of Coal Mine Safety), NCIST used to be the branch school of Beijing Coal Management Institute at Yanjiao (BSBCMI) and was founded in 1984. In 1993,BSBCMI was transformed into North China Mining College (NCMC) with the approval of former State Education Commission. In 1997, former State Education Commission confirmed NCMC as one of the key institutions of higher education. And early in 2002, North China Mining College was upgraded into North China Institute of Science and Technology.

Located in the east of Beijing----Yanjiao Economic and Technological Development Zone, NCIST is only 35 km away from Tian'anmen Square, and 24 km from Beijing Capital Airport. No. 930 bus passes NCIST and provides a convenience to the university.

NCIST covers an area of more than 66 hectares, with a total floor space of more than 300,000 square meters, and fixed assets of 340.6 million RMB. The total value of complete teaching apparatus and devices worth more than 64 million RMB, of which there are multi-functional classroom, closed-circuit television teaching system, multi-media teaching system for language teaching, transmit station for foreign languages and high-speed internet which covers the whole campus and the latter can also be used for long-distance teaching as well as other comprehensive use, such as VOD request etc. Library covers a floor area of 6,551 square meters ( a new library with a floor area of 26,000 square meters is under construction now.); it has a book collection of over 462,000 volumes, and more than 1,600 domestic and foreign magazines; With automatic management system, CNKI internet service station and China Information service center are provided in the library. Comprehensive physical equipments and facilities are well equipped on the campus, and more than 10,000 students can be held in the 8 dormitory buildings standing in shade of trees.

At present NCIST has 927 teachers among which 1 member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 64 are professors, 168 hold associate professors or other senior titles, 268 hold Ph.D. or master's degrees.

Now NCIST has a total of 12 departments, which include School of Safety and Engineering, School of Adult Education, Department of Environment, Department of Mechanical and Electronic Engineering, Department of Electronics and Information Engineering, Department of Computer Science and Technology, Department of Architectural Engineering, Department of Management, Department of Literature and laws, Department of Foreign Languages, Department of Basic Curriculum and Department of Physical Education. Six categories including 16 sub-categories within 22 undergraduate majors and 31 associate-degree majors have been created here. Undergraduate majors include mining engineering, safety engineering, mechanics design and manufacture and its automation, electronics and information engineering, computer science and technology, international economy and trade, civil engineering, Chinese language and literature, English language, information and computational science. Associate-degree majors include Computer network and software application, business marketing, electronic business, journalism etc. The total full-time student number is over 10,000, including 100 international students.

International education exchange programs are carried out through the year. There are three state-level centers located on the campus, which include National Safety Training Center of Coal Mines supported by UNDP, Chinese Information Center of Professional Safety and Health of the International Labor Organization, and Sino-Australian Management Training Center in cooperation with Australian Government. Long-term stable inter-scholastic and cooperative relationship has been established with many universities in US, Korea, Australia, Vietnam and other countries. More than a dozen of our scholars and teachers have gone abroad for visiting and improving their academic level, at the same time, more than dozens of foreign experts and scholars come to NCIST for visiting and giving lectures. NCIST has also received the Certificate for Inviting Foreign Experts and the Certificate for Taking in International Students . Over 10 foreign teachers come to teach on the campus every year.
