ESL Teaching and Learning Tips
Hi Dr. Zack,
This is my situation: I have been given the opportunity to teach one Adult second language learner. I would say that her level is low intermediate or simply intermediate. I can have a conversation with my student, but she needs help with pronunciation and more complex vocabulary. Her goal is to learn English for a specific purpose which is to find a job in an apartment complex or office. My major problem is that I do not have a curriculum (informal class w/no specific program) nor a textbook. I don't really know how to develop a curriculum or what activities and materials to use. I was told that I should assess her needs and then develop a plan or syllabus of what I am going to teach her. This is fine, but I am still finding it hard to come up with activities on my own. Would you suggest that I find a textbook to help me make a plan? One last thing is that I am going to be getting another student and she is on a completely different level. She only knows a few words and expressions. How can I effectively teach both of these adults? Please help!
