Teaching of cursive writing
By:Chunping Wu <chunpingwu2001@yahoo.com>

Fellow teachers of English:

Since the last three years in China, I have found some local teachers wrote some of the English letters in a very different ways. For example, they didn't correct the wrong writings in the pupils workbook, but signed something looked like "aood!", where "a" was written like capital G without the center horizontal line but a very short vertical one. It seemed that they had never learned the regular cursive writing. After my hinting, they still didn't agree with me.

Recently, I found a grade 7 text book, Go for it! originally published by Heinle & Heinle Publishers, 20 Mark Plaza, Boston, MA 02116, USA, and under the copyright by People's Press and Thomson Learning (A division of Thomson Asia Pre Ltd) in Sichuan. In the Starter of which, I found the same mistakes, and committed by some of the Chinese teachers, such as the Capital Cursives were mostly looked the same like the Capitals in printing fonts, while some of the small cursives were different from what we learned in the West. I rechecked the text books and pamphlets published by Canadians, they all go by learning the Printed Capitals and Smalls first, and then the Capital and Small Cursives. So, I am in doubt if I were too old fashioned in teaching my students, and a newer way has been taught in China only?

As a 'Foreign English Language Teacher', we do have the responsibility in helping the teachers and students to learn the language the right way. Due to the lacking of some of the irregular fonts, I couldn't show you how some of the Chinese teachers were doing, in their A, G, F, P's, please check the mistakes from the book that I found as the following:
