ESL Teaching and Learning Tips
Dr. Z, I posted my 4x4 matrix as a test to see how it would appear on this web page. It didn't come out, unforunately, so let me explain what I use it for.
This matrix serves as a 'check' for me when I both plan and 'dry run' my tests and exams.
For instance, the 'speaking' portion of one of my exams will test more than just 'phonology'. It will also test grammar and lexicon in all students, as well as fluency in more advanced learners.
When I dry run a test, I note if the prototype does test each of the realms it should (phonology, grammar, lexicon, and speed/fluency) by checking off the realm in the matrix. Sometimes a realm doesn't need to be included, such as 'fluency' if the test is given to beginners.
In the coming days, I'll be posting an outline for creating a TEFL test that goes with this matrix. Hopefully, the puzzle will then be complete.
