ESL Teaching and Learning Tips
Hello,
I've been teaching English to English Major students in China for 6 months. They have all done at least 6 years of English prior to University and I am aware that this learning did not include a lot of spoken English. They tell me they don't want to do grammar as they know it all.
I have not taught English prior to this position.
What I've found is that there are many different levels of English comprehension, grammar and speaking in my classes. Some need classmates to translate what I say for them, some write a short passage using an electric dictionary from start to finish.
All can speak written English, but when it comes to writing, their sentence structuring is really quite inadequate/bad. This inadequacy of course flows into their free speaking. Many know it - I suppose comparing themselves to my speaking English. This has them be very reluctant to speak at all.
What do you think?
Is it about sentence structuring and do I have to go back to the basics of grammar?
What is a good way to teach sentence structuring without having to go back to basics?
