Employment Tips

Employee Motivation
By:Darren Williger

Employees are also known as the internal customer of an organization. If they are satisfied and enjoy their work environment then your organizations growth will be phenomenal. The problem is that more often, we miss out on our employees and focus more in business development. The end result is that we have a database of customers but employees with low morale who do more harm than good. The bottom-line is that employee motivation is integral to the success of any organization.

In the last couple of years, organizations have started to treat the issue of employee motivation with more respect and seriousness. There has been an introduction of new in-house employee targeted programs, rewards & recognition programs and many more. Here are some tips that will help you in employee motivation and provide them with a healthy working environment.

Foundation: laying the foundation for an employee driven organization or work environment may look a little difficult and will include a lot of hard work but the returns are going to be good. Employees need to feel as if they own the company, which will motivate them and create a sense of responsibility. Above all, there should be a joining orientation program targeted at new recruits. You can do it in two steps:

Step 1: Give them a brief about the history of the company and the future goals and vision. Tell them where they belong in this entire plan and how important they are to the organization.

Step 2: Give them a responsibility and put them in a position where they can think from the point of view of the organization and provide meaningful solutions. This will make them feel belonged and motivate them to achieve higher goals.

Environment: The most important part is to create the right working environment. This can be done by:

Lateral Profiles to increase responsibility
Open forums
Training programs
Benefits introduced to initiate the process of employee involvement
Provide proper guidance
Compassion: If you are always ready to listen to them then they feel like a part of the team. It gives them a lot of motivation to surge ahead.

Rewards: play a crucial role in driving performance. If one particular employee has done great work then reward him or her so that everyone else in the team also get motivated to perform better and get a reward. It is a psychological phenomenon and if your rewards can make them work as a team and drive a high performance then why not. A reward doesn’t necessarily mean that you increase their salary; you can also take them out for lunch or for a weekend baseball game. This helps to create a stronger bond within the team.

Tasks & talents: If you have a team of 10 people then the first thing to do is know their strengths and weaknesses. Once that’s done, provide each one with a task they are comfortable with and can do with ease. Keep rotating their tasks, so that everyone gains enough confidence and is motivated to handle just about any task.
