The rise of new technology has brought about the advent of a lot of things that have changed the way we view and live our lives today. Things like microwave ovens and the latest refrigerators have changed the way we treat and look at food. The latest developments in automobile technology have even changed the way we view distance and traveling. Very soon we may even fly to our destinations or even just sleep all trip long while our cars drive us to where we need to be. And cellular phones? They have revolutionized the way we look at communication! Now there's no more need to snail mail romantic letters or to even call your friends and loved ones. With the development of SMS, things have just become so much easier.

And it's become so much easier that people have taken to the phenomenon like crazy. It's such a compelling thing that it has even created it's own version of the English language. This sub-language is known for its expressiveness using emoticons as well as its economy due to its use of several abbreviations. Phrases like 'I love you' become 'alufyu' and so forth. It's popular not only because it is so much easier to use but also because it is quite cute in its own way. And it is mostly harmless when used in its own context.

But many teachers in high school are complaining that SMS has become so powerful that it has started to affect the writing styles of many students around the United States. The mutilation of what many believe to be the proper form of speaking English has become so widespread that a lot of educators are becoming concerned that students are missing out on the basics because of this phenomenon. A lot of people have become concerned that the quality of English in most schools has gone down considerably because of it.

It may just be the talk of purists or people who are afraid of change but it's also important to strike a balance between the traditional form of the English language and the SMS form. It's best to know which form to use depending on the situation.
