English Learning Tips For Students

1.When teaching pronunciation, make sure you're teaching the right thing. If you're unsure of how a word is pronounced, you can always look it up. Doubt what you know. (It's "mow-tuh-veyt" and not "maw-tee-veyt.")

2. Drills have always been effective. Don't expect your students, however, to perfectly produce a sound in one attempt. Their first language always comes in the way, so give them practice from time to time. Besides, it's not called "drills" for nothing if something is not drilled into your student's head. It takes time.

3.Some male leaners think they'll sound effeminate if they make the right intonation, so they prefer to talk in a tone unvarying in pitch. Work miracles, and erase that thinking. If you're a male teacher, set a good example.

4.If your student is having difficulty pronouncing a word, teach the sounds separately. Start with the toughest sound. For instance, if the word is "gross," you can say, "Say, 'oh'." Next, instruct him to say, "ohs," and then "rohs" until you complete the word.

5. Teach your student English songs, and then let him sing. In singing, the sounds are prolonged. If you can apply this when you teach (or learn) pronunciation, why not do it? Some students can't get the idea of linking or liaison. If it's difficult explaining this concept, you can relate it to singing.

6. Don't be nitpicky. Sometimes, it's difficult to tell if the student is pronouncing a word right (e.g., the -s ending in "blanks"). Maybe, you need to brush up on your listening skills. If you can push your headset's receiver into your ear so that you can hear the student better, do it. If, in your assessment, the student is not really pronouncing the word or producing the sound right, you can always do some drills.

7.The most important thing to remember is that pronunciation is not just about how to say a word right. There's what we call stress, intonation, and linking or liaison. Teach your students these. Do sentence drills, not just word drills.
