The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is one way to prove you are able to speak and write in English. It is the most widely respected English language test in the world, according to the TOEFL website. The test proves that you can speak English, and for many schools the scores are a benchmark used to determine placement. Studying in an English-speaking country often depends on how well you perform on the TOEFL test, so studying is important.

Writing
Practice your writing to study for the TOEFL test. A written portion of the test requires you to demonstrate that you understand how to write in English. Use the TOELF website (see Resources) or other study websites for prompts, and then write the answers. Have someone who knows English well look over your writing. Factors such as verb tenses, slang and spelling are important to your score.

Reading
You will need to read English to take the test and pass it. Work on your reading in any way possible. You can use the TOEFL website to brush up on some main reading points, but you can also read your favorite book in English, surf the Internet and read English-language pages, or read magazines or newspapers to study for the reading portion of the test.

Speaking
Some TOEFL tests include spoken portions. Even even if they don't, you'll need to pass a spoken interview to get into some schools and study programs. Practice listening to spoken English in television and movies, and join conversation groups that will help you prepare to listen to and speak English.

General Test Study Tips
Sign up for the TOEFL as soon as possible so you know when the test will be. Get plenty of sleep before the test, and eat breakfast or lunch on the day of the test. The test has several parts; pace yourself so you can complete each of them.
