It is not only important to be able to read and write English, but to be able to speak it well. You can communicate more effectively if you take the time to follow tips on speaking English. Even native-born English speakers can benefit from improving their language skills.

Keep Vocabulary Simple
Someone who uses complex and uncommon words is difficult to understand. The person listening is immediately trying to figure out the definition of the word used, instead of listening to what is being said. Don't try to impress others by being a walking dictionary. Use words that are simple and easy to understand in everyday conversations. You will improve your spoken English by using words with the correct meaning when you keep the vocabulary simple.

Keep Sentences Short
Long and complicated sentences are difficult to hear and understand. In spoken English, keep sentences shorter than you would in written English. This will allow the listener to understand you better. Combining simple vocabulary with shorter sentences, you are less likely to make grammatical errors. Before you know it, you will have a reputation of being someone that is easy to talk and listen to.

Practice Pronunciation
To improve spoken English, practice pronunciation. Record yourself reading stories or newspapers out loud. Are you difficult to understand? Are there certain words that you habitually mispronounce? Take time to listen to other people speaking English. A dialect or heavy accent does not mean you're doomed. Just practice daily making your spoken English clear. You can even practice pronunciation by singing along with the radio or karaoke machine. Often, we lose our accents and dialects when we're concentrating on singing a song or sounding like a particular musical artist.

Fix Problem Sounds
Some of us have trouble with specific sounds when speaking English. Identify which sounds are the most challenging for you. Do you say a particular type of word incorrectly? Write down the word that is a problem. Make a list of rhyming words. Daily, say the initial word and read the list out loud, focusing on pronouncing the sound correctly. Record yourself to chart your progress. Have someone else say the words for you to hear how they correctly sound. Concentrate on one problem sound at a time. Once you have fixed one problem sound, repeat the process with the next one. You will quickly improve your spoken English and be easier to understand.
