Learning English in America requires practice and training. American English is much different than English in other countries, with varying slang usage and regional dialects confusing the beginner English speaker. Numerous resources are available for learning English and practicing the language on a daily basis creates fluency. Conversing with native English speakers is one of the most effective methods of learning, but taking classes will teach the proper sentence structure and accepted word usage.

Enroll in a study abroad or foreign exchange program. These programs allow foreign students to study in the United States school system. Courses are available for high school and college students. Courses in English are offered through some of the programs but students will also interact with English-speaking students. The interaction-based learning combined with classroom learning is effective for learning English in a short period of time.

Attend an English as a Second Language course. ESL courses are offered in public school systems and through state, county or city programs in immigrant-rich regions. The ESL courses are typically focused on teaching Spanish speakers the English language. Courses are available for other language groups, depending on the region. Many courses are offered free of charge as a community service, but not all.

Enroll in an English language school. Several schools are designed to teach English to visitors and immigrants. Located in various areas, these schools offer programs ranging from beginning to advanced.

Teach yourself English by reading a translation dictionary and talking with native English speakers. This approach forces you to communicate and retain information quickly.

Learn English in America with an interactive media program. Several programs are available as Internet resources and in software formats. The programs use voice interaction to simulate live conversations.

Practice as often as possible to increase the rate at which you learn. Also converse with your peer group to learn the slang terms.

It is difficult to learn English in America if you do not branch out from your immigrant culture. You must talk with the natives to speak like the natives.
