WORK EXPERIENCE

02/2016 - PRESENT Nanyang Normal University, Nanyang, Henan Province, China
Working mainly with English major students in small classes has allowed me to offer a very close-knit teaching experience. Therein, I’ve endeavoured to hone students’ linguistic abilities, both individually and with each other, through highly structured oral English lessons based on a given topic, as well as oral English skills classes. I’ve also pursued involvement in extra curricular activities, like competitions and English corners, to help nurture the students’ potential even further. More recently, I have had the opportunity to design and mark written exams for flight attendant students, which has helped me hone my academic responsibility and creativity.

09/2012 - 01/2015 Nanyang Institute of Technology, Nanyang, Henan Province, China
05/2015 – 08/2015 Udon Pattanakarn High School, Udon Thani, Thailand
09/2015 - 01/2016 Nanyang Institute of Technology, Nanyang, Henan Province, China
Working with both English major students and students of other disciplines, I took a practical approach to teaching by giving students ample opportunities to speak openly in class and participate in group discussions and scenario-driven role plays. This enabled them to hone their speaking abilities and learn new forms of vocabulary and expressions. While in this job, I also put great emphasis on developing students’ grammar and pronunciation skills by creating bespoke lessons and workshops designed to help nurture these abilities. Furthermore, I often took the opportunity to be involved in a variety of extra-curricular activities, such as English corners, and training students for English speaking competitions, in order to provide further assistance in their English education.

Chinese law requires that any foreign national working in China for five consecutive years must leave the country for at least six months. I thus left this job temporarily in January 2015 and went to Thailand for a period of eight months. While there, I worked at Udon Pattanakarn High School, in Udon Thani, from May to August 2015, teaching oral English to their students. As I was teaching younger students than previously, my teaching approach in this job was more simplistic, mainly teaching basic pronunciation skills and simple group speaking exercises. I left this job after the summer of 2015 so I could resume my job in China. I remained at Nanyang Institute of Technology for one further semester.

02/2012 – 06/2012 Henan University of Technology, Zhengzhou, Henan Province, China
At this university, I mainly worked with English major students, teaching them oral English. The focus in this job was to develop their public speaking and conversational skills through prepared speech exercises, dialogues and role plays, as well as discussions and debates. I also had the opportunity to teach English writing while at this university, the focus being on developing the students’ grammatical and written communication skills, and also improving their ability at professional and creative writing.

02/2010 – 01/2012 Henan Polytechnic University, Jiaozuo, Henan Province, China
Teaching English as a foreign language to Chinese students, some majoring in English and others studying different subjects. The focus at this school was largely on oral English tutelage; teaching students proper English pronunciation and intonation, as well as new forms of expressions and vocabulary. My teaching approach was largely practical; giving students plenty of opportunities to practice speaking through prepared dialogues, role plays and open discussions, in order to hone their development. In this job, I also took every chance I could to be involved with extra-curricular activities, such as English corners and judging English speaking competitions.

07/2005 – 01/2010 Royal Air Force
Non-Commissioned Officer initially in the Royal Air Force Music Services and later in the Royal Air Force Regiment. My role in the RAF Music Services was as a drummer, providing musical support to the Air Force in the ceremonial band, the RAF Regiment Band, and the jazz ensemble, the RAF Swing Wing. In these bands, I participated in ceremonial musical duties, live entertainment and competitive musical performances. Service in the RAF Regiment was with No. 63 (Queen’s Colour) Squadron, which included deployment to Northern Ireland and Afghanistan for peace-keeping, counter-terrorism, reconstruction and training purposes, as well as defensive and ceremonial duties in the U.K. My role as an NCO was also to train, lead and administrate smaller sub-divisions of the squadron. Since leaving active service, I have occasionally volunteered for training and security duties with the British military, most notably during the London 2012 Olympics. Major achievements in this career include participation in live performances and ceremonial events, being awarded medals for campaign service and promotion to the rank of Sergeant.
