To Whom It May Concern:
I’ve recently returned from teaching ESL to Chinese post-graduate and doctoral students at the elite Xiamen University in Xiamen, Fujian, China, where I’ve held an associate professor position for the past six years. At Xiamen University, I found myself engulfed in teaching ESL courses covering a broad spectrum of topics — from American Culture and Education, to Leadership, and How to Learn any Language. I designed curricula for several courses during my time in Xiamen, including Job Interviewing and Resume Writing, Writing for IELTS, and Poetry Writing.
In addition to my work at Xiamen University, I developed and maintained a private tutoring practice and developed my own web page for study abroad preparation services, including instruction on how to pass the speaking section of the U.S. embassy visa questioning. During this period, I was also employed by several study abroad and English training schools in the cities of Xiamen and Quanzhou, where I helped students raise their English speaking proficiency level with the specific goal of passing tests like the TOEFL or IELTS.
Prior to moving to China in 2007, I was employed as an English Teacher at Crossroads Public School, an alternative education facility outside of Heber Springs, Arkansas. In this position, I was able to help young people deal with educational challenges in the face of personal hardship.
Earlier in life, I entered into the field of mental health as an intervention specialist. I worked as a social worker and in mental hospitals/facilities in both Arkansas and Texas, with all age groups for almost four years.
My path has varied greatly, but it has always led me back to education. My most recent professional life has particularly prepared me for the position I’m applying for today. I would love the chance to meet face to face to learn more about your needs as a prospective employer. Please feel free to contact me at your convenience.
Kind regards,
Bert Self
