This city lies in the centre of Spain and is a well known historic centre. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Salamanca is the home of the oldest university of Spain. It is known as the University of Salamanca and its history dates back to 1218. Other than the university, the city is well known for historical monuments and it is also a centre of modernization with beautiful bars and restaurants. One specialty of the monuments that are present here is that they are made of Villamayor stone which provides a golden appearance at sunset.

Places of attraction

Plaza Mayor de Salamanca

It is the central square of the city. Built around the 18th century, it is one of the most beautiful places of Salamanca. There is also a city hall in the northern side of the square. The architecture of the building is beautiful and is well decorated. Medallions of famous personalities of history like Charles I, Ferdinand VI and Alfonso XI can be seen here in the city hall.

Salamanca Cathedral

There are two adjoining cathedrals in Salamanca. One is called the old Cathedral and the other is known as the new cathedral.

The Old Cathedral was built around the 12th century. It is a Romanesque cathedral and the Gallo Tower inside the cathedral is worth noticing. There are tombs of noble personalities and the Bishops inside the cathedral. The mural paintings in the interior of the cathedral are a fine piece of art.

The New Cathedral was built in the period 16-18th century. The architecture of the place is mainly Gothic along with Plateresque which is a style of the Renaissance period.

Casa de las Conchas

It is a Gothic style structure built around the 15th century. It is also known as House of Shells because of the large number of shells that are decorated in the peripheral walls. The art of this place is a mix of the Renaissance and the Mudejar cultures. Large numbers of tourists come here all round the year to witness this beautiful shell covered building.

La Clerecía

It is a historic building of the 17th century. It consists of a church and some rooms that were used as classrooms. The Jesuits taught here.

The church is built in Baroque style and was also used as a living place for the monks. Presently the building is being used as a headquarters of the Salamanca Pontificia University.

University of Salamanca

It is the oldest university of Spain and was founded in the year 1218. It is the first school in Europe that was given the title of University. A number of students including foreign students come here to study various subjects.
