Greek Island Hopping (Greece)
By:Wes Davidson

A vacation to Greece isn't complete without a trip to at least one of the islands. You can fly to most of the islands but the journey is best experienced by sea. One of the most glorious sights in the world is waking up to the mists hanging over Santorini as you arrive on the overnight ferry. The poet Homer memorialized the mystique of the Aegean and Ionian Seas and one can't help but think of Odysseus and his journey when you look out on the horizon from the deck of a seafaring vessel.

Corfu is one of the larger Greek islands and is a great place to start if you are cruising from Italy. It sits just off the coast of mainland Greece in the Ionian Sea. It doesn't have the same quaint appeal as some of the smaller islands but it has a gorgeous coastline and fantastic beaches. While in Corfu take the opportunity to check out some of the underwater caves in the cliffs that are accessible only by boat. With the right guide you can free dive into some of the caves closer to the surface. It is a once in a lifetime experience.

Mykonos offers a completely different experience than Corfu. Its narrow winding streets and the small white buildings that dot the island are straight out of a postcard. You will quite literally see donkeys being used to carry goods and giant pelicans as you walk down the village streets. The terrain here is rocky and dry but the beaches are beautiful and attract windsurfers from around the world.

With a little research you can find the island that best suits your needs, whether they be clubbing, shopping, or sunbathing. It is essential to have a car rental in Greece as the public transportation is unreliable at best. When you get to the islands you want to be able to get to the more remote areas and find your own private paradise away from the crowds!
