Zurich, Switzerland - Things to Do
By:Wes Davidson

Zurich is a unique city. For one it is much cleaner than most. This may seem like an odd statement, but its true. You will be struck by the almost sterile like cleanliness of this metropolis. After getting over the initial shock that a city can be so clean, you will be pleased to find Zurich is brimming with character. There are all the modern amenities that most cities have like nightclubs, fine dining, and haute couture boutiques, but there is also a bustling old city where the past shines through in all its quaint and charming glory.

Shopping in the old part of the city is a special treat. It is an enclave of craftsmen and artists practicing trades and skills that time has all but forgotten. Cobblers, candlestick makers, tailors, metal smiths, jewelry makers, and of course the ubiquitous watchmakers can be found here making and selling some of the most finely crafted goods in the world. Wandering through the narrow streets of the old city is not only an amazing shopping opportunity it is the exploration of a living museum. The architecture here is ancient and well preserved. The Fraumunster Church is over 1100 years old and is still in pristine condition.

After touring the old town follow the River Limmat down to the shores of Lake Zurich. Lake Zurich is one of the most beautiful sites in all of Europe. The lake is flanked by the old city and the newer developments and to the southeast lies the Alps. On a clear day the Alps dominate the horizon and inspire awe like few other mountain ranges can. There are several floating restaurants along the shores of the lake, but to get the full experience rent a pedal-boat and take to the water with the famous swans.

Zurich has that rare blend of magnificent architecture and culture with breathtaking natural beauty. The great thing about being in Zurich is that you have all the conveniences of a major city and the Alps are at your fingertips. It is recommendable that you rent a car in Switzerland so that you can explore the Alpine passes and really take in this gorgeous mountain range. Zurich is an amazing city and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
