Writer Jessica Ackerman: Hiking Trips through Spain

Spain is full of beautiful scenery and pleasant hiking and biking trails. If you have a chance to visit or live there for an extended period of time, you should give them a try. You'll be able to find many different kinds of trails, including challenging high altitude trails as well as those which take you along the coast. If you've never hiked in Spain before, here are some hiking trail ideas to get you started.

Cabo de Gata
In southern Spain, you'll find Cabo de Gata, which is a beautiful natural park in the Almeria region. Here you'll find plenty of scenic landscape to explore. The area has frequently been photographed and used in films, so you'll truly enjoy experiencing the spectacular desert and coastal scenery. This area is especially pleasant in the spring or autumn, and even on winter days on pleasant sunny days. Depending on where you walk, you'll find plenty of diverse sights to see. There are small fishing villages which you can explore, such as Aguamargua. If you enjoy bird watching, Cerro de los Lobos along the coast is a great spot. Cerro de los Lobos and La Punta del Lomo are both marine reserves, which are great for observing nature as you walk. There are also old gold mines in the area, and the Faro de Gata lighthouse. Other beautiful natural sights include Playa del Monsol, which is a volcanic beach, and the beautiful coves of Playa de los Genoveses.

Pyrenees
You'll find plenty of places to hike around the Pyrenees, ranging from easy hikes to more mountainous trails. If you care to hike some of the more mountainous trails, yo make sure that you're in good physical shape. The ascent can be quite challenging in some areas of the region, and even some of the lower altitudes in the area can be fairly rigorous. However, the scenic views in the area make the effort worthwhile. If you are unfamiliar with the area, sticking with the park trails is probably the best option, since they are generally well marked. If you plan on hiking overnight or if you plan on a several day hike, you might want to take advantage of the numerous refuges along the way. These huts are spaced out rather nicely along the established routes, offering sparse but adequate lodging and even meals for hikers.

Cathar Trail
Wallking along the Cathar trail is somewhat like traveling through time. Although the entire trail is quite long, you can start it at any point, or simply hike only one portion of it. The spring and autumn seasons are best for hiking this trail, since there can be snow anytime from December to April. On the eastern part of the trail, the sun can be too intense to hike the trail during the summer. There can also be violent winds along the western portion of the trail. But depending on the portion of the trail you choose to hike, you might be traveling some of the same rocky paths walked upon in olden times.
