Walking In Majorca Discover The Real Island (Spain)
By:T. Maniscalco

A holiday based around walking in Majorca might prove to be a real eye-opener. Its not until you get up close and personal with the true charm and personality of this Mediterranean gem that she reveals her secret side.

The two faces of Majorca

Majorca, or Mallorca as it is also known, hasn't always received the best possible press. In the 1960s and 1970s some parts of the island were subject to large-scale development and it became a mass-tourist destination. In the 1980s, some resorts also became perceived to be destinations best suited to the 18-30 age group, and primarily interested in catering for their interests. However, this image is simply not the real island. The real Majorca remains an island of true beauty and charm. It is capable of offering a huge diversity of attractions and cultures and it also varies widely in terms of the holiday experience it can offer.

Around the bay of Palma, there are large and well developed resorts of the type that typically appeal to younger and more energetic holidaymakers. By contrast, the north-east side of the island and some of the inland areas are completely different.

Seeing the real Majorca

For example, the ancient Roman town of Alcudia is surrounded by its restored town walls and is a maze of ancient streets that today are full of shops, bars and cafes. It also has an intriguing craft and local market, which is well worth exploring. It is really only by taking a holiday that allows you to do some walking in Majorca, that you will be able to experience this town and its fascinating history to the full.

Not far from Alcudia are the mountains and coastal resort of Formentor. At one time the famous hotel and the surrounding countryside were known as the playground of nobility and the rich and famous. Today, it is also an area of outstanding natural beauty with stunning sea views and great walking opportunities.

No discussion of the opportunities for walking in Majorca would be complete without mention of Valldemosa - the one-time home of Chopin and Georges Sand. The village is located high up in the mountains and there are numerous opportunities to walk in the surrounding hills and valleys to explore the magnificent scenery and wildlife.

Even parts of island that are comparatively well-known, such as the capital, Palma, can be seen in an entirely different light if you are on a guided tour walking the back streets with an expert leader who is able to highlight to you important points of architectural beauty and historical charm.

One island - two aspects

It would be the huge mistake to dismiss Majorca as merely a location of beaches, water sports and nightclubs. It really is so much more than that - as you will discover if you take time to do some guided walking in Majorca.
