Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris

Pere Lachaise is one of the most famous cemeteries in the world. Located at 16 Rue du Repos in the 20th Arrondissement of Paris, France, it houses the remains of a host of famous bodies including Jim Morrison, Oscar Wilde, Gertrude Stein, Camille Pissarro and Frederic Chopin. Read on to learn how to visit Pere Lachaise cemetery.

Take public transportation to get to Pere Lachaise cemetery. When riding the Metro, get off at the Père-Lachaise, Gambetta Porte or Philippe Auguste stops. The latter two stops let you off at the uphill side of the cemetery, so it is an easier walk downhill through the graves. Use the Pere-Lachaise stop after you exit at the downhill side of the cemetery. If you ride the bus to the cemetery, use buses numbered 61 or 69.

Know the times and dates the cemetery is open. The cemetery opens during November 6 through March 15, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m., Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and Sunday and public holidays from 9:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. From March 16 through November 5, Monday through Friday, the cemetery opens from 8:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. and Sunday and public holidays from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.

Plan your route before you go. The cemetery is very large and has numerous winding paths through the gravesites. Visit the cemetery's official website to see a map of famous gravesites. Alternately, upon entrance to the cemetery you can find stands with free maps and information about the graves. The cemetery has onsite consultants who can help you find graves should you get lost.
