How to Travel on a Shoestring When Visiting Rome, Italy
By:Giselle Berge

The history, architecture and food are enticing, but the prices can be enough to make any would-be traveler re-evaluate her vacation plans. Along with being one the world's most beautiful cities, Rome is also one of the most expensive. However, the high prices need not make the Eternal City off limits to budget-conscious travelers. With a bit of flexibility and travel savvy, experience your own Roman holiday on the cheap.

Travel off-season to take advantage of seasonal bargains. Hotel prices are highest from April to October, but expect significant discounts from November to March.

Rent an apartment rather than booking a hotel room. Not only does renting an apartment give you more space, but you also have the option to prepare some meals at home, which saves money on dining out. Share an apartment with a few friends for even more cost efficiency. Most major travel magazines keep a list of recommended European apartment rental agencies in their online archives.

Enjoy your espresso standing up. When in Rome, do as the Romans do and stand at the counter at a café or bar. The price will be higher if you take your meal at a table and have a server wait on you.

Purchase a Roma Pass. The special tourist cultural card offers numerous discounts to museums and archaeological sites, as well as free travel on buses and trams in the city center over a three-day period. As of 2011, the Rome Pass costs 25 Euros -- or $35 -- for a standard pass.

Create your own walking tour by strolling from piazza to piazza. With its magnificent churches, sculptures and fountains, Rome boasts some of the most breathtaking cityscapes in Europe. Walking is among the best ways to enjoy the city. Better yet, it's free.
