Top List of Things to Do in Morocco

If you're planning to visit Morocco or live there in the not-too-distant future, there are a number of things you should plan to do and sights you should plan to see. With so many interesting possibilities, it can sometimes be difficult to narrow down your list of "must see" and "must do" options to a manageable collection. If you're having a difficult time deciding what you want to do when you arrive in Morocco, here are a few of the most popular activities and destinations that you'll undoubtedly want to consider.

The Fes Tanneries

Leather production is one of the more popular industries in Morocco. The practice of tanning leather has a long tradition in Morocco, dating back to the medieval times. Interestingly, not a lot has changed in the Morocco leather tanning industry since these original times. As such, visiting the tanneries can be a great way to take an interesting look back into time.

When you visit the tanneries in Fes, be prepared for the fact that you'll be visiting the leather shops of the bazaar as well. Although it might seem to you that your guide is only taking you through the shops so that you'll have a chance to see (and buy) some of the beautiful leather jackets, handbags, and other wares offered for sale, it's also because these shops offer these best view of the industry overall. Although the stench of the animal hides can sometimes be a bit much, a tour of the tanneries is definitely worth it.

Enjoy Some Traditional Moroccan Food

If you enjoy great cuisine, you'll definitely want to take the time to sample the traditional foods of Morocco. Moroccan cuisine draws it's inspiration from a variety of different sources, including the Arab, Turkish and traditional Berber cuisines. Today you'll also find a variety of fine dining establishments in addition to the more traditional cuisine. If you enjoy cooking, you might even want to seek out a cooking workshop, where you'll be able to learn some of the traditional techniques and dishes.

Traditional Hammam Steam Baths

In olden times, private bathrooms were extremely rare in individual homes. As such, the hammams, or public steam baths, were basically the only bathing option available. Although modern plumbing has definitely changed the availability of private bathrooms in homes, it can still be a great experience to visit a local hammam. Many of the luxury hotels provide massages and scrubs as part of a luxury hammas experience. However, the working-class hammas that are generally located near the mosques can provide a more authentic experience.

The Sahara Desert

No trip to Morocco should be considered complete without a trip to the Sahara Desert. If you've never been there before, you'll be undoubtedly stunned by the experience. Even if you can only manage to spend a night or two, the experience is definitely worth the time and effort.

Surfing

Being able to surf in Morocco may seem strange after visiting the Sahara Desert. However, you'll find plenty of great places to surf, especially if you visit during the winter months. During this timeframe, you'll find mild temperatures and good swells, both of which are great for surfing. In addition to traditional surfing, kite surfing is also quite popular and enjoyable.
