Tips to Save Money on Your European Backpacking Adventure (Budget, Europe)
By:Matt Blaschuk

Have you been thinking of backpacking Europe. There are many ways that you can save money and still see everything you want.

One way you can stretch your dollar is to take regional trains if possible. In many countires, such as Italy or Scotland, you get can from destination to destination by taking direct trains. As an alternative, you can also take the regional train. The regional train is for locals to get to major centers, stopping at every small town. This takes longer, but it will get you to your destination, and it could save you up to 50% on the cost of your ticket.

To save money on a daily basis, stay at a hostel that is close to public transportation. Selecting a hostel that is far from major transportation routes can quickly add money to your daily expenses, as you might have to take a taxi just to get close enough to take a bus or train to tourist attractions.

Another way to save money is to try and book hostels that offer a complimentary breakfast. Buying meals in Europe can be very expensive and this will save you from buying one meal per day.

If you are a full-time student or teacher, or are between the ages of 12 and 25, buy an International Student Identity Card (ISIC Card). ISIC cards are accepted at many major attractions and the discounts will save you a bundle . You can also get discounts on some train and bus passes in Europe with the ISIC card. ISIC cards are sold in North America.

If you have a flexible schedule, book a last minute flight to Europe. Booking flights to Europe from North America can be quite expensive if you book in advance. Travel agencies often offer cheap last minute flights, when they are under capacity. Attempt to book a flight about a week before your trip to the cheapest destination in your itinerary and start your trip from that destination. This is risky, but it can have significant savings.

When you are in Europe, make sure to always make your purchases in the currency of the country you are in. In many countries, travelers that pay with foreign currency, such as the American Dollar, end up paying more for the same good or service than if they were to pay in the native currency. This is because the exchange rate charged by merchants can be drastically worse than the actual exchange rate. You can exchange currency at local banks, who usually give the best rate.
