If your idea of a Ukraine trip goes beyond the big city lights of Kiev (Kyiv) or Odessa, then the fortress city of Kamyanets-Podilsky or the Carpathian Mountains might just be what you were looking for. These two destinations offer a more rewarding experience for those who prefer to get off the beaten path.
Kamyanets-Podilsky - the Fortress City
This is known as one of the oldest cities in the Ukraine. Its beginnings are still not completely understood. But the most recent estimates, due to archeological finds, puts its initial construction in the eleventh century.
The city fortress sits in loop in the Smotrich River which makes it very easy to defend. It is widely accepted that it was built by the Dacians while engaged in the Roman-Dacian wars.
What attractions might you expect? The city fortress itself is the attraction. The initial structures and those that have been added over the years offer insight into the Ukraine history.
The city is home of the Ukraine's first gymnasium as well as the Pushkin Enlightenment Center. There are also over 200 monuments to see.
The Carpathian Mountains is the Destination for Adventure
Are you on the prowl for an outdoor adventure vacation? Then the Carpathian Mountains are for you! Getting there is easy and affordable. The Ukrainian rail will get you there from just about any major city. Once you've arrived, you can choose from one of the many resorts that dot the mountains.
What's your favorite activity? Hiking is a very popular pastime in the area, so don't forget to pick up one of the easily available topographical maps. Rafting? The Prut River and the Bistrita River run through the Carpathians and there a number of guided rafting trips available.
If cycling is your thing, there are a number of great spots to hop on and ride. With an abundance of both paved and unpaved roads, you won't have any problem renting either a road or trail bike and exploring to your heart's content!
