Top 5 things to do in Lanzarote, Spain
By:Tim George <lcholidays@yahoo.com>

In 2009, Spanish tourism was badly hit by the recession and the adverse effects of the strong Euro, with numbers of tourist falling by 10% for the whole region. Lanzarote, one of the most popular of the seven Canary Islands, was particularly hit by the decrease in tourist activity. Holidaymakers need to fall in love with the stunning volcanic island again and remember what makes it such a great place to go away to. We have listed the top 5 activities to enjoy while on Lanzarote holidays.

Go to the beach
Lanzarote is renowned for its superb beaches and its safe and warm seas. The island boasts more than 90 beaches of golden and white sand. You will find the most beautiful beaches in Lanzarote’s top resorts of Costa Teguise, Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca. The beaches of Papagyo and Farmara are popular with the locals while wild and natural beaches can be found in Orzola.

Go on a safari
There is no better way to explore the inaccessible regions of Lanzarote than by going on a safari trip. For an energetic and fun-filled day out, you and your party should climb in a 4x4 and enjoy a bumpy but exhilarating ride around the volcanic island. You might even end up with a video of your trip. Daredevils will opt for a quad safari and drive through the streets, desert areas and lava fields of Lanzarote. Drivers willing to take the wheel must have a valid driver’s license.

Go fishing
Game fishing is a very popular pastime in Lanzarote. You can charter a boat as a group and go fish for shark, tuna, marlin and wahoo. This activity is for the adventurous tourist who doesn’t mind being roughed up as some of the fish being caught can weigh up to 250 kilos. Fishing excursions regularly depart from Puerto del Carmen and Puerto Calero. The best fishermen on the island can also take part in fishing tournaments.

Go to the carnival
Carnivals in Spain are always momentous occasions and the carnival in Lanzarote is no different. While a bit more subdued than its Brazilian counterpart, the carnival in Brazil boasts sumptuous floats, glittering costumes, lively music and dancing. Carnival starts in the last week of February at different dates and locations on the island, the most animated areas being Arrecife and Puerto del Carmen.

Go on a camel ride
A visit in Lanzarote would not be complete without a camel ride. According to some history books, camels were imported on the island in the 15th century. The camels were used in the fields and also during armoured combat against English invaders in 1790. Today, they dedicate themselves to more peaceful activities, carrying tourists around the Volcano Park at Timanfaya.
