Public transport in Thailand - Teachers discussion

In Thailand, I use public transport, as in minivans and buses. The fares are cheap, but both can be a bit crowded at times. I've not seen the aftermath of van wrecks in the newspaper or on the roadways, so the drivers of vans must be pretty safe. I've seen a few bus wrecks, but only on the big blue and white government buses.
If I wanted to, I could plunk down about 500 USD for a motorcycle.
