According to the wiki page about Clarkson it would seem his wife has been the driving force (no pun intended!) behind his success as a journalist, as you say whether his gaffes are genuine or just pre-scripted to get publicity is up for debate. Personally I do believe he is a foot in mouth type of person who is very forthright and just speaks his mind and does not suffer or tolerate fools gladly. I actually agree with him about somethings, like when he said retiring concorde was a great leap backward for mankind, and relegating it to being on display at heathrow a travesty.
