The term "model minority" was coined to describe the incredibly successful integration and contribution of Chinese immigrants in the United States. As U.S. immigration policies have tightened and as China has become the fastest growing national economy every year for the past 30 years, fewer Chinese immigrants have chosen to emigrate to the United States.
Since 2001 I have lived in two of the three Chinatowns in New York City, Manhattan's and Flushing. Thousands of second generation Chinese-Americans, ABCs, drive into Chinatown every weekend from their suburban homes to take their parents out to dinner.
In Fuzhou and Xiamen in Fujian Province, U.S. citizens of Chinese descent return for Spring Festival to visit their grandparents who are now living in high rise apartments that their grandchildren have purchased for them.
The contribution of Chinese immigrants to the development of U.S. society cannot be overestimated. It certainly should not be disparaged.
