Not really true on the beer. China is not Iran or Saudi Arabia. If you ask nicely, most will let you bring in beer from a shop nearby. They may be muslim themselves, but they will not turn away paying customers who want to eat their food, in my experience. I can only recall encountering hostility to beer at one muslim noodle restaurant, but I suspect they were more strict in their belief and possibly from a very fundamentalist area of Xinjiang. The hui places never seem to mind, I even recall one younger hui bloke saying he wanted to drink beer with me some time as he enjoyed it!
