Hi Lindsey!
Visuals will probably help a lot.
You could try TimeLine charts - available from teacher supply stores, or you can make your own - and put relevant pictures at critical, important dates. Use charts as well, to show interactions amongst different groups, and maps (especially history maps). Also, as many Primary children's history books - the ones with loads of pictures - as you can lay your hands on.
