Now it is really part of China.
Silverboy, it never really belonged to the UK. As a crown colony, it was more akin to a protectorate like Iraq and Oman. It was mostly non interventionist in policy, read "Gweilo" by Martin Booth, excellent book. The only success I would say we Brits had is in the introduction and usage of English there. When I went to Macau noone seems to speak portuguese or held the portuguese in very high regard at all. It speaks volumes they had to replace the statue of the portuguese officer with fountains at Senado Square, whereas in HK they still keep the statue of the Queen and british names.
Interesting thread though.
